She placed her blankie in it, amazed at how it could fit perfectly.

Then, she slipped her feet into the shimmering shoes.

Everything seemed to have been sized just for her.

He stepped away and presented her to the mirror so Madison could admire herself.

“I really look like a princess,” she exclaimed.

She started to hum the music which had popped into her head.

The sound became louder as she began to move to the music. The beat grew so loud it pounded all around her.

The soft fabric slithered with her every move. The more she stared at her reflection the more she admired herself.

She began strutting to the music. With each stomp, her shoes clenched her feet.

She wanted to be seen and spun around to catch the nobleman’s gaze.

His back was turned.

“Hey, don’t I look great...?”

She was stunned by the desperate tone of her voice, but the young man remained motionless.

She twisted and tried to attract someone else’s attention, stamping her feet to the beat of the song, now screaming inside her head.

“Look at me, I’m as beautiful as a princess!”

No one looked. They just stared at their own reflection.

One girl shouted,

“So what, I’m the princess!”

Then, another yelled,

“No, I’m the princess!”

A third snapped dryly,

“You wish you could be a princess as pretty as me!”

Madison peered at herself in the mirror, unable to stop moving to the beat. She could only keep pace with the refrain, which bewitched her brain.

The heels of her shoes had started to grip and tighten to the point of pain. On the elegant gown, colorful sequins started to sprout and scratched her skin. The pearl bracelet had morphed into a silver mirrored band, which cut into her wrist.

Despite the increasing pain, she stared intensely into the mirror and motioned to the music. She could see the golden curls of the noble boy caressing the back of his cloak, as he shook his head from side to side.

She thought she heard his faint lament,

“No ... Not her.”

Madison suddenly realized that her behavior was unbecoming of a princess. She squeezed her eyelids shut in horror at how she had behaved, and the music stopped.

She stood still for a moment.

Then, without opening her eyes, she turned away from the mirror.

The bracelet stopped squeezing.

The dress became soft and smooth on her skin.

Once again, her shoes coddled her feet.

“This is not the way to become a princess,” she whimpered to herself, ashamed. She straightened her spine, lifting her neck and pulling her shoulders back. It had been a moment of weakness.

She immediately regretted the ease with which she had fallen for vanity and vulgarity, compromising her true character.

She waited a little longer to regain her confidence.

Her lips took on a gentle smile and, finally, she opened her eyes to discover a blue door had appeared.
